When we toppled the Taliban in 2001, it left a considerable power vacuum in Afghanistan. We took the first steps toward ensuring that the vacuum was filled by a democratic government, but unfortunately didn't get very far, and now the country is largely in control of drug lords. Poppy production is way up, and we're not talking the kind that goes in muffins. I dunno, maybe Kabul can get some kind of sister city program going with Bogota.

Boy, if only we hadn't had to divert so many resources away from Afghanistan so that we could fight Al Qaeda in Iraq. Oh, wait...
