The guy from the insurance company finaly came out and did his estimate on my car today, and I'm quite pleased with the outcome. He estimates the damage to be more than half the value, so they're not going to pay to fix it. Fine by me, I don't care if it's fixed anyway. What they will do is either total it, or pay me an "appearance settlement", which means that they don't total it, and just pay me some money to cover the loss of value to the car.

So, the guy is going to run the numbers on what I'll get if they total it (the value minus what they'd get for salvage)...value of the car is around $1000-1200, and salvage would be around $400. So if they total it I'll probably get $600-$800. The appearance settlement would fall between that at $750, and my car would be worth more when I get rid of it since it won't be totaled. Sounds to me like that's the way to go unless the total value ends up being significantly more than $750.
